with this 5 days circular tour explore the Sahara of Morocco both by foot and 4x4. Cross the Atlas Mountain range at its two most renowned High Passes, each above 2000m, The Tichka and Test Passes, Enjoy Morocco’s southern hospitality in characterful Kasbah guest houses. A great introduction to Morocco’s outdoors for those who wish to combine desert trip, and camping off the beaten path, with charming rural accommodation.
we leave your hotel in Marrakech to drive up into the highest Mountains of the Atlas Mountains. we head up through the Ourika Valley. with its lovely streams and waterfalls, to the resort of Oukaimeden, a centre for trekking and skiing and the town of asni. climbing into the peaks of the Toubkal range (the highest in Morocco), amid hillsides covered in wildflowers, we visit the beautiful 12th century mousque at Tinmel, the former teasury of Morocco. Futher on, we come to the Trekking center of Ouirgane and its Gorges, and head over the Tizi N’Test Pass (2093m), descending to the pertty village of Taliouine, famous for producing saffron, where we will spend the night.
this is a day to relax, explore,stretch your legs, and get some great photographs visiting traditional Mountain Villages and farms. we will visit the local saffron co-operative to learn about how this delicate spice is produced from crocus flowers, how to tell fake saffron from the real thing, and how to use it properly in cooking. This is some of the highest quality saffron you will ever find. and makes a wonderful souvenir or gift to take home.
Today, we head for the Sahara Desert. leaving Taliouine, we drive first through the scenic foothills of the Anti Atlas, with views of the Jebel Sirwapeaks, to the bustling market town of Tazenakht, where there is a carpet weaving co-operative, and south over two High Mountain passes to Foum Zguid. this little Market town, where you might pick up some antique Berber articles, is a gateway to the Sahara Desert. From here, we travel off-road through the Jebel Bani Hills, passing the expanse of dried-up Lake Iriki on the route of the Paris-Dakar Rally. We camp Overnight in the rose-coloured dunes of Erg Chegaga, some of which are 300m high!.
You will wake early today to see the sunrise over the dune-a magical sight! After breakfast, we head on across the Sahara towards the town of M’Hamid, formerly a major center for nomads and trading across the region. from here, site of an 11th century zaouia ( seat of learning). Beyond its tightly-packed Kasbahs, the library – once the largest in the country-can still be visited, with 12th century illuminated Korans and other ancient books. we then follow the Draa Valley, through vast palm Oases, to Zagora, famous for its dates, and finally to Ouarzazate, the provincial capital. Overnight in hotel or Riad.
Our final day takes us back through more magnificent scenery and heritage sites in the High Atlas. not far outside Ouarzazate, we visit the spectacular hillside town of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO world heritage Site, where over 20 major films have benn made, from lawrence of arabia to Gladiator. it has the largest and best-preserved collection of Kasbahs In Morocco to the cites of the North. the journey continues on along the ancient caravan route that traded goods between the south of Morocco to the cities of the north we pass through wonderful scenery, mountains Girges and traditional Berber Villages, to visit the Kasbah of Telouet, former stronghold of the famous Glaoui tribe who ruled Morocco in the 19th century. This impressive fortress has a fine interior, decorated with ornate plasterwork, painted wooden panels and ceillings, and beautiful silks. We re-join the main road near the Tizi N’tichka Pass 2260m, and enjoy dramatic mountain landscapes in the afternoon light, to arrive back at your hotel or Riad in Marrakech in the early evening.
